The Attorney General’s Office has decided to open a disciplinary investigation and provisionally suspend the prison director, Major (r) Carlos Yecid Molina Chaparro.

The High and Medium Security prison in Valledupar, known as Tramacúa prison, is in the eye of the storm after reports of alleged parties and drug use within the penitentiary facility.

The events that led to this measure were reported by various media outlets. Reports of excessive celebrations, apparently organized by inmates of courtyard number 3were corroborated by videos posted on social media. The images show inmates enjoying alcohol and drugs, in clear violation of prison rules.

The Attorney General’s Office has collected testimonial and documentary evidence in order to clarify the possible involvement of officials under the command of Major Molina Chaparro. It is investigating whether these employees facilitated the entry of alcoholic beverages, weapons, narcotics and mobile devices into the prison.

The Regional Attorney of Cesar, Miguel Ángel Rocha, has stated that the director could have incurred in omission of his dutiesas he is primarily responsible for ensuring security and order in the detention center.

In addition, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing whether a fight that occurred on June 17, which left four inmates injured,has some relation to the recently reported party and alcohol consumption scandals.
