“Discussions about how we will cooperate in the Seimas elections with Igna Vēgėle are not over. And today I could not say that he will not be on the list of the Union of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens”, said R. Karbauskis to “Žinių radio”.
“The final answer will be in two weeks. I can say that those discussions are successful and Ignas himself confirms this accordingly,” he added.
The politician assures that he is currently discussing value issues with I. Vēgēle.
“The decision that Aurelijus Veryga leads the list does not mean that Ignos Vēgėlė will not be on the list,” assured the leader of LVŽS.
He assures that he has never “taken the reins” of his colleagues: the faction would say that there was too much democracy
Although he himself will not take part in the autumn Seimas elections, the chairman of the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union (LVŽS) Ramūnas Karbauskis assures that if the leader of the list of candidates, Aurelijs Veryga, becomes the prime minister, he will not interfere in the politician’s work. In general, the “peasant” claims, contrary to what is said, he is not inclined to “pull the reins” of his colleagues. According to him, LVŽS members can assure you that during the last term, there was even “too much democracy” in the party.
This is what R. Karbauskis said on Friday when asked by “Žiniai Radio” whether A. Veryga, after becoming the prime minister, will really be an independent politician and R. Karbauskis will not seek to influence him indirectly.
“Here’s another contrived idea that someone is getting behind the reins.” If you ask the members of our Lithuanian Peasants and Greens union faction (…), our colleagues who worked in the faction would clearly say that there was too much democracy, not the other way around,” said R. Karbauskis to “Žinių radio”.
“I’ve never been a leader and I never will be, because my approach to management as a whole – whether it’s politics or business – is this: if a person has a certain position, he has to take responsibility in that position and to make decisions. Do not interfere with his work. I have more than 50 companies in reality and in business as well, in whose work I do not interfere. If a person starts interfering with it… It is impossible to see everything, understand everything, control everything. A person would be crazy to do that,” he explained.
In addition, the chairman of LVŽS added, “Aurelijs Veryga is the kind of person who does not need someone to interfere in his work.”
R. Karbauskis would not see G. Paluckas in the position of prime minister: such a proposal would be disappointing
The chairman of the Lithuanian Peasants’ Green Union (LVŽS), Ramūnas Karbauskis, would not support the candidacy of Social Democrat Gintautas Paluckos for the post of prime minister. Contrary to what President Gitanas Nausėda said, the “countryman” assures that Mr. Paluck lacks the competence to lead the Government.
“If they (social democrats – ELTA) are able to form the Government, the nomination of Paluckas as prime minister would be very disappointing,” said R. Karbauskis to Žinių radio on Friday.
“He never distinguished himself as an authority in the party or the Seimas. This is a bit of the wrong competence and the wrong opportunities that a prime minister should have,” he added.
According to the leader of LVŽS, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has stronger candidates for the post of prime minister.
“If I were to decide that alone, I would definitely not agree that the prime minister could be with such competences as Paluckas is today. The Social Democratic Party is much larger. There are strong people in the municipality, there is a chairperson who can apply. I think that they will not disappoint the people of Lithuania and will not propose a person who is weaker than the ministers”, noted R. Karbauskis.
“Peasants” and social democrats would be enough for a coalition
Speaking about the new ruling majority, the “peasant” believes that two parties may be enough to form a coalition after the autumn Seimas elections.
“Looking at the presidential elections, looking at the potential of the parties, the opposition parties LVŽS and LSDP have the greatest potential in the elections. (…) two parties can be enough in the coalition – Social Democrats and LVŽS”, he thought.
R. Karbauskis claims that this would happen again in 2016. a scenario where the ruling majority consisted of “peasants” and social democrats. However, he says that he has learned from the mistakes he made in the previous term of the Seimas and would tend to listen more to the coalition partners.
“It may happen again in 2016. the scenario that two parties are enough to form a stable majority. In terms of a coalition, it is much easier for two parties to work than for three or four,” the LVŽS leader taught.
“We all learn from our mistakes, we made a lot of them in 2016 as well, when we had a huge faction and underestimated the ambitions of the much smaller Social Democratic Party and we could have given them the position of Speaker of the Seimas and perhaps there would have been no split.” Before the elections, the most important thing is for the leaders of the parties to talk,” he added.
At that time, the social democrats who left the coalition with the “peasants” were led by G. Paluckas, who is currently considered one of the most realistic candidates for the post of prime minister.
ELTA reminds that on Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda named G. Paluckas as a suitable candidate for the position of prime minister. The chairman of the party, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, also agreed that G. Paluckas was a suitable candidate.
However, before the second round of the presidential elections, the head of the country G. Nausėda said in an interview to Elta that if the Social Democrats won the elections in the fall, he would see V. Blinkevičiūtė as the prime minister. The head of the country did not rule out the possibility of trying to persuade the chairwoman of the LSDP to take the post of the head of the government.
However, the president assured LRT television that he had no intention of pressuring Social Democrat leader V. Blinkevičiūtė to take over the leadership of the Government after the October Seimas elections.
In the Seimas elections to be held in October, the LSDP list will be led by party chairwoman V. Blinkevičiūtė. G. Paluckas is number two in the list of the multi-mandate district.
