Weather from July 1 to 7, 2024 in Guatemala

We tell you that during the week of July 1-7, 2024he National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology ―INSIVUMEH― has forecast weather conditions marked by a high percentage of humidity in Guatemala. Humidity and atmospheric instability from the Pacific Ocean will occur.

In the mornings, the regions of Valles de Oriente, Franja Transversal del Norte, Altiplano Central and Occidente will have areas with fog or mist. It is expected that in the morning hours there will be few clouds, alternating with scattered clouds. However, in the afternoon, partial to total clouds with rain and/or drizzle are expected, accompanied by electrical activity. These circumstances will be more frequent in the regions from the south to the center of the country, including the Franja Transversal del Norte. In the North and Caribbean region, scattered rain with electrical activity will occur at the end of the afternoon or at night.

The atmospheric conditions mentioned above may favor the formation of severe local storms, with rain and strong winds, as well as hail. This could cause lahars on the Fuego and Santiaguito volcanoes, sudden river flooding, flooding and damage to the country’s road network and infrastructure.

Forecast for July 5, 2024:

By Friday, the passage of the Eastern Wave No. 7 of the hurricane season. This phenomenon will cause rains with electrical activity to continue in most of the country. The regions of Bocacosta, the south of the Central Altiplano and Valles de Oriente will be the most affected, with significant accumulated precipitation.

At the moment, this meteorological phenomenon does not represent a direct danger for Guatemala. The system is expected to approach the country on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning, which will increase instability, decrease atmospheric pressure and bring the Monsoon Trough closer to the country. These conditions could increase cloudiness and rain from Friday until the beginning of next week.

According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center ―NOAA―Beryl is now a Category 4 hurricane and moving west-northwest. It is forecast to weaken in the next day or two, but could maintain hurricane intensity in the northwestern Caribbean.

Tormenta tropical Chris

On the night of June 30th, tropical depression three intensified to the tormeta tropical Chris. This system weakened again to a depression on Monday as it made landfall in Mexico.

Insivumeh indicated that this meteorological phenomenon would not be directly affecting the country, but would favor the entry of humidity from the Pacific. As indicated, these conditions would favor the presence of clouds, precipitation and electrical activity during the afternoon or night, mainly in Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Sololá, Totonicapán, Quiché, Retalhuleu and Suchitepéquez. The greatest accumulations of rain could occur in the departments near the border with Mexico. In the regions of the Northern Transversal Strip, Pacific, Eastern Valleys and Central Altiplano, scattered rains with electrical activity will occur in the afternoon and/or night.
