Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo, who attended the inauguration of the Panamanian president as a special envoy to the president, traveled to Morocco on the 4th to support the export of Korean-style railway vehicles.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 5th, Morocco is the only country in Africa that possesses a high-speed railway and is the most advanced country in railway infrastructure development on the African continent. In 2015, it announced the ‘Morocco Railway Vision 2040’ and plans to expand the total length of railway lines to 4,410 km.

Morocco is also pushing forward with a 5 trillion won project to purchase railway vehicles to ensure stable passenger transport during the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

This government-level procurement support was quickly implemented ahead of the deadline for bidding for the Moroccan railway vehicle purchase project on the 9th in order to increase the competitiveness of our company, which is relatively disadvantaged compared to French companies that manufactured Morocco’s existing vehicles and Spanish companies that co-hosted the World Cup.

Minister Park Sang-woo met with Minister of Transport and Logistics Mohammed Abdeljalil and Director General of the Moroccan Railways Mohamed Rabie Khlie to discuss ways to strengthen railway cooperation between Korea and Morocco and requested their cooperation so that Korean companies can participate in Morocco’s high-speed rail/electric train purchase project.

In particular, along with the first export case of high-speed rail to Uzbekistan on June 14, we promoted K-rail technology, which combines our company’s vehicle manufacturing technology and Korea Railroad Corporation’s maintenance experience and know-how.

He also emphasized that if Korean vehicles are purchased, the two countries will be able to grow together by promoting comprehensive cooperation in the railway sector beyond vehicle supply, including exchanges of operation and maintenance technologies and training of professional personnel.

Minister Abdel Jalil said, “We actively welcome the participation of Korean companies in Morocco’s railway project,” and expressed his hope that technological exchanges between the two countries would be strengthened so that Korea’s railway infrastructure, which has grown to world-class levels, could be benchmarked.

Accordingly, Minister Park Sang-woo invited Minister Abdel-Jalil to the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference (GICC) to be held in Seoul on September 10-11 this year so that he could directly check the status of Korea’s railways, and responded that he would strengthen railway cooperation with Morocco through educational training and expert exchanges.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo emphasized, “At a time when overseas railway markets are opening explosively, including in Morocco, the UAE, and Poland, Korean railway vehicles and railway construction are also challenging the global stage, just like our country’s representative exports, semiconductors and automobiles.” He added, “The government plans to take the lead in promoting K-rail technology to the world and work closely with the Korea Railroad Corporation, Korea Railroad Corporation, and private companies to support the continued acquisition of overseas railway project orders.”
