Dideduc announced the suspension of face-to-face classes in the department of Escuintla, July 2024
On Sunday, June 30, 2024, the Departmental Directorate of Education (Dideduc) from Escuintla announced through its social networks the Suspension of in-person classes in the department due to the strong rains affecting the region. This measure, confirmed by the Ministry of Education (Mineduc), applies to all educational establishments, whether public, private or cooperative.
The climate emergency that Escuintla is going through has led the authorities to take drastic decisions to guarantee the safety of students, teachers and administrative staff. Based on the recommendations of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), the Mineduc has decided that Classes will be held remotely from Tuesday, July 2 to Friday, July 5, 2024 in all educational institutions of the department.
The main objective of this measure is to prevent any type of risk and protect the educational community from incidents associated with the rains. This decision is part of the Mineduc guidelines for the Comprehensive Management of Risk and Disasters in the National Education System, which seeks to ensure a safe environment for the teaching and learning process.
Measures to comply with the 180 days of classes
To comply with the 180 effective days of classes established by the Mineduc The educational community has been asked to continue learning activities through available means. This includes use of digital platforms provided by the Ministry of Education, which will allow students to continue their studies from home.
The distance learning period has initially been set for July 2-5, although it could be extended depending on weather conditions. Authorities will be monitoring the situation and making decisions based on the specific needs of each affected locality.
Measures to take into account due to the rains
When the rains begin to affect the country due to the presence of storms, tropical depressions or hurricanes, Guatemalans must follow certain recommendations to protect themselves and their families, especially those who live in places at risk. Rodolfo García, spokesman for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction in Guatemala (CONRED)indicated that the most important thing is to be prepared to avoid risks and thus not suffer inconveniences with the entry of any atmospheric phenomenon.
These are some recommendations from CONRED to put into practice at home:
- Check the condition of nearby roofs, downspouts and drains.
- Have your 72-hour backpack ready
- In case of electrical storms, unplug electrical appliances.
- Have a family plan, which must determine what each member of the family will do.
- Know the local plan (municipalities and Cocodes).
- Know where the nearest shelters are.
- Have an emergency kit for people and pets on hand.
