Korea Football Association President Chung Mong-gyu announced that he would disclose the details of the process of selecting a new head coach for the national soccer team, which is currently underway amid internal strife including the resignation of National Team Strengthening Committee Chairman Chung Hae-sung, after some time has passed.
Chairman Chung Mong-gyu attended the 2024 Korea Football Association (KFA) One Mind Football Tournament held at the Cheonan Football Complex in South Chungcheong Province on the 5th and said, “There are currently many articles being published regarding the national soccer team coach, but once the selection of the coach is finalized, I think there will be time to explain the process in detail later.”
The national soccer team has been without a coach for nearly five months.
After former head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was dismissed in February following the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup, the selection of the next national team coach was led by Chairman of the National Team Strengthening Committee Jeong Hae-seong, but it was not easy to find a coach who could lead Korean soccer to the World Cup finals for the 11th consecutive time.
Negotiations with coach Jesse Marsh, who was the first choice for negotiations in May, broke down. Coach Marsh later took over as head coach of the Canadian national team. Iraq coach Jesus Casas, who was the second choice, also failed to come to Korea.
After a comprehensive review, Chairman Jeong Hae-seong and the Power Reinforcement Committee selected the final candidates for the national team coach last month, but on the 28th of last month, Chairman Jeong Hae-seong suddenly announced his resignation, sparking controversy. It is an open secret in the soccer world that Chairman Jeong stepped down from his position after a conflict with a high-ranking official of the Korea Football Association.
The power reinforcement committee in charge of the practical work of appointing a manager has effectively collapsed, but the Football Association has made no effort to mend the internal strife. Instead, it has simply replaced the person in charge of the practical work and pushed ahead with the work of appointing a manager.
Since Chairman Chung Mong-gyu appeared in public a week after Chairman Chung Hae-sung announced his intention to resign, attention was paid to his remarks, but he did not reveal any specific position. He simply bought time by saying, “I will reveal the details later.”
The new national team manager has been narrowed down to a foreign manager. Lee Im-saeng, the chairman of the Technology Development Committee who is in charge of selecting the manager, left for Europe on the 2nd and is currently negotiating with former Greek national team manager Gustavo Poyet and former Norwich City manager David Wagner, who are the final candidates.
The Korea Football Association plans to complete the selection of a coach soon, as the third round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 North and Central America World Cup is just two months away.
