The most critical situation is currently in the vicinity of the town of Oroville. The local mayor’s office has issued an order to do without the usual fireworks during the Independence Day celebration and also to light the grills in the gardens of the houses carefully, making sure that the sparks do not fly into a drier place. A forest and brush fire front is approaching the city from two sides, which is currently being extinguished by dozens of firefighters – both from California and other nearby states. Planes have also arrived, dropping water on the burning areas.
CNN, referring to meteorologists’ forecasts, reports that there is currently no basis for optimists. The region will continue to experience temperatures of at least 40 degrees (Celsius) over the next few days, but strong, variable winds will help spread the fire in all directions. Several more municipalities in northern California are already deciding on declaring a state of emergency and have expressed their readiness to ask for help (mainly financial) from the state authorities. For now, however, they emphasize that problems can be solved on a local scale, they write Reuters.
