The National Baseball Series, the most important sporting event of the year in Cuba, continues to suffer the consequences of the fuel crisis that is ravaging the island. This time, the affected teams were the Artemisa and Pinar del Río teams, whose match scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled.
The incident was reported on the Facebook page of the provincial branch of the Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) in Pinar del Río and through reports by journalists from the institution.
“The height of the grass and the late arrival of fuel (gasoline) prevented the ball game between Artemisa and Pinar del Río from taking place,” can be read in the post by journalist Osbel Benítez Polo, from Tele Pinar.
The narrator and sports commentator for Radio Guamá also assured that Inder was the one who broke the news through the corresponding channels.
It was also noted that starting this Wednesday, doubles would be played, starting in the morning, if weather conditions permitted.
After this, it was reported that the matches would be delayed again, since in the morning after checking the stadium following the heavy rains, the designated authorities reported that the Capitán San Luis Stadium was not in condition to host the game.
The person appointed by the National Baseball Commission to inspect the stadium also recommended that the mowing be monitored to lower the height of the grass, which has grown due to several days of rain.
Meanwhile, Daniellys Sánchez, provincial director of Sports for INDER in Pinar del Río, assured that the management of the organization has not evaded the situation, but is working to resolve it.
“To all our followers and baseball fans, we sincerely apologize for events such as these that have tarnished the performance of our Vegueros Team,” the official added.
The director’s statement did not mention the lack of gasoline, although this is not a new cause: on several previous occasions, the lack of fuel in Cuba has led to the cancellation of baseball games and other sports, as well as sporting events.
