The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised against travel to Sicily and surrounding islands in the coming days due to active volcanoes Etna and Stromboli.
A statement from the ministry’s situation center points out that the Civil Protection of the Italian Republic has announced a change from the risk level “green – absent or very low activity” to the risk level “yellow – from low to medium activity” and has ordered municipalities and competent local authorities to be ready to implement the relevant plans for warning the population and action in case of volcanic activity.
The Foreign Ministry points out that the airport in the city of Catania is partially closed due to the presence of volcanic ash, which has also covered a large part of the city. Airport authorities are urging citizens not to head to the airport before checking the status of their flight.
Earlier today, volcanic activity on the island of Stromboli north of Sicily prompted Italian authorities to raise the alert level from orange to code red. Residents are urged to follow the instructions of the local civil defense.
