Protesters who harass pregnant women on the street outside abortion clinics in Germany will face a €5,000 fine. Yesterday, the Bundestag approved new fines after an emotional debate, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
It will now be illegal to prevent pregnant women from seeking termination advice. This will apply, for example, to the so-called sidewalk harassment when women leave counseling centers or clinics.
The ban also includes actions aimed at imposing opinions on the pregnant woman, putting her under pressure. It is also forbidden to show her false statements or disturbing material related to the topic.
Family Affairs Minister Lisa Paus stressed yesterday that street harassment of pregnant women was “unacceptable”. According to her, some of the care-seekers “are already in a difficult situation”.
According to MPs from the centre-right CDU/CSU bloc and the far-right Alternative for Germany, the measures are “largely unnecessary” and the current laws are already sufficient to protect pregnant women.
