Milan’s main international airport will be named after Berlusconi

Milan Malpensa Airport, located about 50 kilometers from the city, will officially be called Aeroporto Silvio Berlusconi.

Right-wing transport minister Matteo Salvini announced the name change on Friday, after Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC made the decision.

Milan’s mayor, Beppe Sala, a centre-left politician, insists the airport cannot be renamed because it is legally established that public buildings and squares can only be named after a famous person 10 years after his death.

There were discussions to name S. Berlusconi’s airport in Linate.

Last month, Milan’s city council rejected a proposal to build a Silvio Berlusconi square. Mayor B. Sala then said: “The rules must be followed.”
