According to ReutersItaly’s civil defense agency issued a “red” alert for the island of Stromboli, warning that the situation could worsen.
Ash in Catania
Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, has been showing intense activity for the past few days. In Catania, on the east coast of Sicily, residents and authorities are clearing the city of ash.
“The runway at Catania airport is unusable due to volcanic ash. Arrivals and departures are suspended,” the airport announced, adding that operations are expected to resume at 3:00 pm (local time, 4:00 pm Greek time).
