Is it possible to compare the situation in the educational institutions of Riga and the region? What differences would you emphasize?
You cannot compare what is in Riga and Pieriga with what is in the regions. We don’t have schools that are overcrowded and we have to think about how to build a new building or extension, because we can’t accommodate all those who want to learn. We have to focus on other issues and problems, including how to motivate young people to return here after vocational education or university. Yes, one part, the so-called super-patriots, for whom the father’s house is important, will return here. However, there are very few such young people. There are still some who don’t want to change anything in their lives – they stay and find some kind of job, they are dissatisfied with everything that happens here – they blame the municipality and everyone around them for not providing them with the kind of life they want. Therefore, it is important to encourage young people after gaining education and experience elsewhere to return to Livani with fresh ideas and implement them here. I am glad that there are more and more young people who have received a good education and are returning. It gives satisfaction to the school and to me personally, because you see that what you invested bore fruit. A sense of belonging, support for new ideas and a group of like-minded people are important for a person to take root here.
You yourself returned here after a longer period of life in Riga and became a school director – why did you choose that?
By the way, my mother graduated from this school and then worked here as a Latvian language teacher, deputy director. She could never have imagined that her son would eventually become a school principal. I returned to Livani after a longer period of living in Riga and started my business here. I was elected as a deputy of Livani region, and when you get into such a position, you have two options: either sit in the opposition and criticize everything, or get involved and do something yourself to change something. We cannot hope that foreign investors or people from outside will come and fix our county, we have to do it ourselves. When the high school needed a new leader, I entered the competition. I passed it, got a teaching education, and now I am the director of this school for the sixth year.
