Carried out under the High Instructions of HM King Mohammed VI, this mega-project aims to divert excess water from the Sebou basin, which was lost in the Atlantic Ocean, to the Bouregreg basin, in order to ensure the supply of drinking water to the Rabat-Casablanca axis, indicates the information site, returning to the completion of the first phase of the installation of the pumping motors of this “river highway”.

The new structure will allow water to be diverted with an initial flow rate not exceeding 3 cubic meters per second to gradually increase to 15 cubic meters per second, it was explained, noting that the project, with a total cost of around 6 billion dirhams, “will quickly reach its cruising speed to combat drought along the area.”

According to the online daily, this initiative is part of the efforts of HM the King, who has been paying special attention to the issue of water for years, including the optimal management of water resources. In this sense, the portal looks back at the Council of Ministers of October 2, 2017, the meeting chaired by the Sovereign on June 5, 2018 and the Royal Speech of October 14, 2022, delivered before the two chambers of Parliament, which were devoted to this theme.

Furthermore, Expartibus notes that this important water structure was built thanks to the national skills and expertise of a group of Moroccan companies, believing that this project “will highlight the dynamism and maturity of Moroccan companies, opening up new international perspectives”.

The interconnection of the Sebou and Bouregreg basins includes a water catchment facility at the guard dam on the Oued Sebou, 67 km of steel channels with a diameter of 3200 mm, two pumping stations with a flow rate of 15 cubic meters per second, and a basin to convey water to the reservoir of the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdullah dam, it is recalled.
