Through the social network X, Miguel Díaz Canel, president of Cuba, he ironized on the accusations of a group of experts in Washington regarding the construction of a base of Chinese espionage near the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay.

Díaz Canel’s statement came after a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which was released Wall Street Journalwhich mentions that the base is located east of the city of Santiago de Cuba, near the neighborhood known as El Salao and has been under construction since 2021.

In response, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossio, denied that the island hosts Chinese military interests. He also criticised Wall Street for launching “a campaign of intimidation without citing verifiable sources or showing concrete evidence”.

CSIS noted that Cuba’s proximity to U.S. military bases makes it a strategic location for the Asian giant, a rival of Washington in terms of intelligence gathering.

Experts noted that these facilities were common during the Cold Warbut both Russia and the US withdrew most of their bases in favor of more advanced technologies.

Despite this, the group mentioned that the Asian country is still planning to build new similar facilities, which include strategic locations such as reefs in the South China Sea.

The statement on these facilities generated debate and geopolitical concern, however, the recent image shared by the Cuban president on the situation, questions and discredits the accusations about the alleged spy bases.
