In the context of tension between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Confederation of States in the Sahel, the African Mediation Initiative Group (GIMA) mediates by pleading for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
On the sidelines of the respective summits of the two organizations, held simultaneously in Niamey on July 6 for the Sahel States and in Nigeria for ECOWAS on July 7, GIMA put together a proposal advocating peaceful coexistence as a necessary path to end it the crisis, in Maroc Diplomatique received a press release.
Closely following the emergence of disagreements between ECOWAS and the three States recently established in the Confederation of Seychelles – namely Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – GIMA expresses its concern about this division, which he considers it harmful to the vital interests of the populations of the Sahel. region.
According to the press release, the president of GIMA, Maodo Malick Mbaye, insists on the need to adopt a posture of flexibility. Such an approach, according to him, would make it possible to reduce the harmful consequences of this section, economically and on social cohesion and peace between the communities.
GIMA emphasizes the importance of prioritizing political and diplomatic dynamics based on peaceful coexistence. This orientation is considered necessary to imagine a permanent resolution of conflicts in this space marked by ancestral ties of kinship, culture and shared values, long before the emergence of the current state and regional structures.
As a reminder, GIMA is an apolitical and non-denominational organization based in Rabat. Made up of intellectuals from civil society as well as African political and social activists, its main mission is to promote fast and effective mediation mechanisms, relying on endogenous resources to manage conflicts in Africa and other regions that require their expertise for reform or peace building.
