As of today, changes are underway regarding the new new cars that will leave our factories. They must now be equipped with technology that may be able to reduce speed, but also accidents. What will really change the way you drive?
It’s a new little alarm that sounds in the car. This is Intelligent speed assist, also known as ISA (Intelligent Speed Assist) or AIV (Intelligent Speed Adaptation). “The car detects that the speed limit is 50 km/h. We are going to exceed this speed. It will start flashing and we will have an audio signal“, René Aerts Jr, Volvo spokesperson shows us.
The car determines this excess speed using sensors and GPS data. An effective system, but not a substitute for the driver’s attention. “For example, if there is work or if there is a speed limit on the back of a truck that is not really for the road. It is also the duty of the driver to adapt to their environment,” the spokesperson clarifies.
The system will not intervene on your behalf. It will simply give you a report.
Currently in some cars for two years, the ISA is now mandatory for all new vehicles put into circulation in the European Union. In the form of an audible or tactile signal with accelerator resistance, this technology is only informative. “You can always speed up in all situations to avoid an accident. The system will not intervene on your behalf. It will simply give you a report. It is a driving assistance that is being introduced by the European Union and that we have already had in our vehicles for some time.“, explains René Aerts Jr.
Measures for road safety
This driving aid is particularly effective against speeding due to inattention and should help reduce the number of accidents. “In general, all measures aimed at limiting speed on the roads are positive from a safety point of view.“, exults Belinda Demattia, spokesperson for the Walloon Road Safety Agency.”They save many lives since one fatal accident in three is related to excessive or inappropriate speed.“; she recalls.
ISA is not the only technology that is mandatory this summer. New vehicles must be equipped with reversing traffic sensors or a sort of black box to store data.
