redditA picture of a train has sparked a heated debate
The question of where you can park your feet on a train is cropping up again. This time it’s about tables. Opinions are divided on Reddit.
Vaughan
There’s a discussion on Reddit about whether it’s acceptable to put your feet on a train table.
Critics emphasize hygiene concerns and disrespect for other passengers.
Proponents argue that it provides convenience and that mutual tolerance in public spaces is important.
According to the SBB, if a serious soiling occurs, a fee of 25 francs may be charged as compensation for cleaning.
Two years ago, there was a debate in Switzerland about whether people could put their feet on the opposite seat on a train. The discussion was sparked by former federal councillor Simonetta Sommaruga’s confession in a 20-minute interview that she had “put my feet in socks on the seat in front.”
“If the shoes are in the air, it doesn’t matter.”
Now feet on trains are once again a topic of discussion on Reddit. This time it’s about whether or not putting feet on the table is acceptable. Opinions are divided. Apart from “it’s absolutely disgusting,” other users find it’s okay under certain conditions: “When shoes are in the air and only pants touch the table,” writes one user. Another agrees if one other factor is met: “Only when the train isn’t extremely crowded.” A few main arguments emerge:
Arguments against legs on the train table
cleanliness
Many users emphasize that this is unhygienic towards other passengers. Feet bring with them dirt and bacteria that have no place on the table.
Respect
This is considered disrespectful, especially if other passengers want to use the table to eat or work.
Culture
Some users view this as a sign of bad manners and a lack of respect in public.

Rest
Proponents argue that it is a way to relax and make travel more enjoyable, especially on long journeys.
Mutual tolerance
Some believe that one should have a certain tolerance for other people’s behaviour on public transport, unless it causes direct harm.
This is what SBB has to say
The SBB has declared that domestic rules generally apply on trains, which are enforced by train staff with a sense of proportion: “We appeal to common sense and mutual consideration,” says spokesperson Fabienne Wittwer. Anything that does not bother you is allowed: “Passengers who feel bothered by the behavior of others can bring this to the attention of SBB staff or other passengers.” In the event of dirt above the normal level, compensation of at least 25 francs can be charged for cleaning.
