Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara will invite Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and it may be at any moment, expressing his hope that Turkish-Syrian relations will return to what they were.
Turkish media reported that Erdogan confirmed on the plane during his return flight from Berlin to Istanbul that they would extend their invitation to the Syrian president, and this invitation could come at any moment.
The Turkish President pointed out that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin has an approach to meeting with Assad in Turkey and the Iraqi Prime Minister has an approach, and he said: “We are talking here about mediation, so what is wrong with it with our neighbor?”
Turkish media reported that the first meeting between Erdogan and Assad in 13 years is likely to be held in Russia, Iraq or one of the Gulf states.
A few days ago, the Syrian President, during his meeting with the Russian President’s special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev, stressed his country’s openness to all initiatives related to the relationship between Syria and Turkey, based on the sovereignty of the Syrian state over all its territories on the one hand, and the fight against all forms of terrorism and its organizations on the other hand, according to him.
