Once again Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman came to Bangladesh Chess Federation. But this time he was brought in a white hearse. Ziaur, who left the illusion of the world yesterday, came to the ground floor of the National Sports Council of Paltan in a frozen body. The second grandmaster of Bangladesh started his journey towards the end after making the last move of his life at the age of fifty.

On Friday (July 05, 2024), Ziaur suddenly fell from his chair while playing the national championship on the chess board. He was then taken to the hospital but could not come back. His funeral was held today at Chirchenna National Sports Council. Many from the sports world turned up to attend his funeral and pay their respects. Various organizations including Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA), Chess Federation, Taekwondo Federation, BSJ have laid wreaths on Dabaru’s coffin. After the ceremony, Ziaur’s body was taken to Taj Mahal Road in Mohammadpur. There, Ziaur was laid to rest next to another chess-playing father Paygam Ahmed.

Ziaur became the second Grandmaster of Bangladesh in 2002. After graduating from Dhaka University, Ziaur Rahman chose chess as his career. Jia’s career high rating was 2570. Which he got in 2005. Which is still the highest in Bangladesh. Ziaur has many achievements in his long career. He got the maximum 14 national league awards for the country. But he left behind all the achievements, the love of people and went to the end.

Syed Shahabuddin Shamim, general secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation, says that his departure is an irreparable loss to chess. Jiaur was never like this. He used to participate in all the tournaments. That others may learn through him.’

The federation general secretary also said about the plan to keep Ziaur’s memory, ‘We were supposed to get a separate floor in the National Sports Council building. There were plans for Grandmaster Corner. Until that happens, we will take the initiative to name the current chess federation sports hall after Ziaur.

Tarfdar Ruhul Amin, one of the vice-presidents of the Chess Federation, said, ‘Yesterday the honorable minister (Nazmul Hasan Papon) and today another guardian of our sports arena, Shahed Bhai (BOA Secretary General) assured to stand by his family. The Chess Federation and we personally will take the necessary steps to provide a support to the family by making a fixed deposit of a large sum of money.’

Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association Syed Shahed Reza told the present journalists, ‘We are all saddened by Ziaur’s untimely death. He left his holy place, the place he loved. Died while playing chess. We have lost a good player.
