Iran expressed its rejection and condemnation of the Arab League’s statements against Tehran, regarding the three islands.

Iran’s envoy and permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, confirmed his “rejection and condemnation of the Arab League’s allegations against Tehran,” noting that “they are baseless.”

According to the Iranian Mehr News Agency, in a letter addressed to the UN Security Council, Amir Saeed Iravani strongly condemned and categorically rejected the accusations against his country, saying, “The issue raised by the Bahraini representative to the United Nations regarding the Iranian islands under this declaration is a clear and unfair interference in Iran’s internal affairs.”

The Iranian envoy said in his letter: “I am writing to you regarding the Arab League declaration attached to the letter dated 20 May 2024 addressed by the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council. Iran strongly condemns and categorically rejects the unjustified and baseless allegations against its sovereignty and territorial integrity, contained in paragraph 11 of the Arab League declaration, and considers them a blatant and unjustified interference in its internal affairs.”

He added: “This action directly contradicts the spirit of good neighborliness, and constitutes a flagrant violation of the basic principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, especially the established principles of sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs.”

“Iran reaffirms its sovereignty over the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb in the Arabian Gulf, and Iran rejects and condemns the use of a fabricated name for the Persian Gulf in paragraphs 11 and 16 of the aforementioned declaration,” Iravani said.

Iran’s envoy and permanent representative to the United Nations added: “Iran reiterates that the “Persian Gulf” is the only legitimate and valid geographical designation for the body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, and it is the name used since ancient times, and all reputable cartographic organizations recognize and refer to this maritime area as the “Persian Gulf”, which must be respected by all.”

The three strategic islands, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, are located in the Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil production passes. The three islands constitute a point of attraction between Tehran and Abu Dhabi, which have good political and economic relations.
