Mr. Houmy, who is also Vice-President of the United Nations Forum on Forests, stressed the importance of the enlightened vision of HM King Mohammed VI, in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change and combating desertification, said a statement from ANEF.

According to ANEF, Morocco’s active presence at this international conference underlines “its commitment to international cooperation for the sustainable management of forests and the fight against climate change.”

He added that Morocco continues to play a leading role, particularly through several initiatives such as the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin and the Triple A initiative (Adaptation of African Agriculture) which demonstrate Morocco’s proactive involvement and also by hosting the Regional Coordination Unit of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification for Africa.

In May 2024, Morocco also launched an initiative on community forest management, technological innovation and sustainable financing, in partnership with the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests, recalls the same source.

The conference was an opportunity to highlight the importance of the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” Strategy in mitigating and adapting to climate change, while contributing to sustainable development goals such as poverty reduction, ecosystem restoration and promoting access to sustainable energy, the press release said.

The conference concluded with the adoption of a declaration by Heads of State and Government calling for the inclusion of the African and World Decade of Afforestation in the United Nations Agenda, the statement noted, adding that this declaration also supports a coordinated and effective global strategy for afforestation and reforestation.

Moroccan participation in the CIAR reflects “a strong and continuous commitment to sustainable forest management and the fight against climate challenges, as part of a dynamic of increased regional and international cooperation,” the press release notes.

CIAR1 was hosted by the African Union and the United Nations Forum on Forests. This critical event brought together world leaders to develop a comprehensive afforestation and reforestation strategy, integrating technical, scientific and financial aspects, in response to the challenges posed by global warming.
