Escape: Project Silence Steel

On a bridge filled with thick fog. Car accidents occur one after another due to the heavy fog. Flames rage, and people scream. Even a rescue helicopter crashes, breaking off both sides of the bridge. To make matters worse, combat dogs charge at people. It’s a total disaster.

With communications cut off, the only one who can communicate with the outside world is Cha Jung-won (Lee Sun-kyun), an administrative officer at the Blue House, who is holding a walkie-talkie. However, Cha Jung-won does not tell the survivors the truth. Instead, he is eager to cover up the incident. He lies that the dog trained by the military for combat is crazy. He comforts them by saying that they will be rescued if they wait a little longer. Will the people be able to safely get out of this bridge?

Director Kim Tae-gon is being asked about the late Lee Sun-kyun at a press screening of the film 'Escape: Project Silence' held at the I-PARK MALL CGV in Yongsan, Seoul on the 8th. The late Lee Sun-kyun's last film, 'Escape', depicts the story of people who fight to survive in extreme situations, such as a chain collision accident in thick fog and an out-of-control military guinea pig that is released on the airport bridge that is on the verge of collapse. 2024.7.8/News 1

The movie ‘Escape: Project Silence’, which opens on the 12th, is a disaster movie that depicts the story of what happens after a huge bridge built over the sea becomes isolated due to the worst fog. The scenes of cars colliding one after another and a rescue helicopter crashing onto the bridge are realistic, as if watching an actual disaster. The humor of the tow truck driver (Joo Ji-hoon) who visits the scene to handle the accident relieves the tension here and there. It is worthy of being a summer tentpole (a film that aims for box office success by mobilizing a large production budget and famous actors) with a production cost of 18.5 billion won.

The film is actor Lee Sun-kyun’s last work to be released after his death in December of last year. It was filmed in 2022 and was invited to the non-competitive section of the 76th Cannes International Film Festival in France in May of last year, but it will be released in Korea after 1 year and 2 months.

Director Kim Tae-gon, who directed the film, said at a press conference on the 8th, “I thought it would be great if Seon-gyun hyung was here. There were parts I missed while directing, but he gave me a lot of opinions about the character’s emotions and movements.”

Lee Sun-kyun’s acting is reminiscent of his past works. Cha Jung-won’s cynicism toward those of lower social status reminds us of Park Dong-ik’s ignoring his driver in the movie ‘Parasite’ (2019). His desperate running for survival is reminiscent of the detective ‘Go Gun-soo’ he played in the movie ‘A Hard Day’ (2014). Lee Sun-kyun’s signature low-pitched voice, widely known for his roles in the dramas ‘Pasta’ (2010) and ‘My Mister’ (2018), captivates the audience.

On the 14th of next month, the movie ‘The Land of Happiness’ in which he plays the lead role will be released. Lee Sun-kyun plays the role of ‘Park Tae-joo’, the secretary to the head of the intelligence agency who was involved in the assassination of the president on October 26, 1979. The consecutive releases of his posthumous works will likely be the last gift to the fans who remember him.
