Songpa-gu, free risk assessment
Predicting the likelihood of occurrence in 10 to 15 years
Songpa-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Seo Kang-seok) announced on the 8th that it will once again conduct free ‘Alzheimer’s Dementia Risk Blood Test’ this year, which predicts the possibility of developing dementia 10 to 15 years later through a simple blood test.
The Alzheimer’s disease risk blood test measures the degree of aggregation of ‘beta-amyloid’, a protein that causes dementia, with just one blood draw, and evaluates the risk of developing dementia 10 to 15 years later based on the values. Songpa-gu introduced this test for the first time in Seoul last year, and began free testing for seniors over 60 years old in the district.
According to Songpa-gu, 1,200 seniors were tested last year, and 31 of them were diagnosed as being at high risk for dementia. Songpa-gu officials said, “We are working hard to prevent and manage dementia in seniors by linking cognitive health programs to those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in advance.”
Songpa-gu plans to support blood tests for 1,080 senior citizens aged 60 or older living in the district starting this month. The tests will be divided into the first and second rounds. First, a one-on-one Q&A-style ‘cognitive screening test (CIST)’ will be conducted to evaluate overall cognitive function. If the test results are normal, a second blood test for Alzheimer’s dementia risk will be conducted. The blood test results will be available within about two weeks. If cognitive decline is suspected in the first test, support will be provided to accurately diagnose the current cognitive status through a ‘diagnostic test (cognitive assessment)’ without a second blood test. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by phone at the Dementia Care Center starting on the 8th of this month. For more information, call the Songpa-gu Dementia Care Center (02-2147-5050). Mayor Seo said, “We will carry out various health promotion projects for the healthy old age of senior citizens and protect the health and happiness of our residents.”
