On the 4th, a special lecture and mini-concert titled ‘K-Pop from the Godfather of K-Pop’ was held at Oxford University’s Sheldonian Hall in England.

The special lecture that day opened with performances by musicians Yang Kyle and PIANNOOO, and composer Kim and Professor Ji-eun Cho of Oxford University’s Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies discussed the past, present, and future of K-pop in a Q&A format.

Composer Kim Hyung-seok said, “K-pop is a unique phenomenon that began when the music market collapsed due to the emergence of digital music, and it turned the crisis into an opportunity.” He added, “It is evolving while embracing various cultures and languages. Despite some concerns, the future of K-pop is bright.”

Regarding artificial intelligence (AI), which has recently become a topic of controversy, he evaluated, “It is undeniable that AI is changing the creative paradigm, but I believe that it can create synergy in a direction that complements and supports rather than replaces the unique creative abilities of humans.” He also announced the ‘Oxford Declaration’, saying, “In the future, not only will I permit the Oxford University research team to use approximately 1,400 songs that I have created for language education, but I will also pursue a plan to receive a license in case they are used for educational purposes in consultation with the Korea Music Copyright Association.” The audience of approximately 500 responded with loud applause and cheers.

On this day, composer Kim Hyung-seok, who became the first Asian pop musician to give a lecture at ‘Sheldonian Hall’, drew attention by announcing ‘Ganada Song’, which he had collaborated with Professor Cho Ji-eun, and a choir from a prestigious British middle school (Christ Church Cathedral School) sang ‘For the Reason of Love’ in Korean, which was very moving. When a deeply moved audience member appeared during the event, composer Kim Hyung-seok showed off his sense by playing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ on the spot.

Composer Kim Hyung-seok, who successfully completed his lecture, said, “I am honored that K-pop has taken over Oxford University, a world-renowned university,” and added, “Language is important in the age of artificial intelligence, so I will do my best to ensure that the Korean language is widely spread and taught.”
