Ever since Donald Trump became president in 2016, fake news has been the focus of public attention. A Washington Post investigation compiled more than 30,000 false or outlandish claims made by Trump during his time in office. However, according to many observers, this is just the tip of the iceberg. A frequently expressed fear is that the public sphere of politics is increasingly corrupted by false information: populist parties, other news portals and media groups in authoritarian states publish a lot of content that cannot be understood any fact check. The Internet and social media support their spread. Concerned observers fear “infiltration of the political public by fake news” (Jürgen Habermas), to which there is currently no answer.
