The former manager of the Electric Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC), Gonzalo Uquillas, who currently serves as Director of Information Systems of the National Electricity Operator (CENACE), will soon leave his position at this entity.
According to a statement issued by Cenace’s Human Talent Department, Gonzalo Uquillas’ voluntary resignation has been accepted and he will opt for non-mandatory retirement. His last day of work at the company will be June 30, 2024.
Uquillas’ management of Celec has been the subject of criticism and controversy. He initially took over as manager of Celec in 2018 and then returned as acting manager in April 2020. After leaving this position, he returned again in December 2022.
In January 2023, Uquillas publicly mentioned that Hernán Luque, former coordinator of Public Companies during the government of Guillermo Lasso and prosecuted in the Encuentro case, asked him to resign from his position at Celec. Despite this, Uquillas continued working in the electricity sector, later being appointed as director of Information Systems at Cenace.
Throughout his career, Uquillas has been the subject of criticism related to the lack of investment in the electricity sector, which is currently facing a crisis with unprecedented power outages. Specialists such as José Alvear have held Uquillas responsible for the lack of execution and have raised accusations of alleged acts of corruption against him, even filing a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office.
The departure of Gonzalo Uquillas from Cenace marks a turning point in the national electricity sector, while the company is expected to announce details about his succession and plans to address the current challenges in the country’s energy supply.
