The British newspaper, The Guardian, revealed that “the new Labour government is set to take a position that differs from its predecessor, the Conservative Party, regarding a memorandum before the International Criminal Court, regarding the possibility of the court issuing an arrest warrant against Israeli leaders.”

The newspaper said, “The new government, led by Keir Starmer, is expected to abandon a previous move by Rishi Sunak’s government, which sought to challenge the authority of the International Court to issue arrest warrants against Israeli citizens, in an attempt to postpone any attempt to issue arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, due to war crimes in the Gaza Strip.”

The report stated that “Labor Party officials confirmed that they believe that the court, which is based in The Hague in the Netherlands, has jurisdiction in Gaza.”

The previous British government submitted a secret memorandum to the International Criminal Court on June 10, stating that the court “has no jurisdiction over Israeli citizens.” The ICC responded to the memorandum by giving the British government until July 12 to fully submit its demands, but according to the newspaper, it is highly likely that the new government “will not continue these procedures.”

The new British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, told Reuters that his country wanted to take a balanced position on the war in the Middle East and would use diplomatic efforts to ensure a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, said last May that he was seeking to issue arrest warrants against leaders in Israel, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing his belief that “Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Yoav Galant are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel.”
