Following the Guinean government’s press release suspending artisanal gold and diamond mining throughout the national territory, the decision is being widely followed in mining areas of Siguiri.
In the sub-prefecture of Kintinia, thousands of gold miners are at home, others are preparing to return to their original locations. Visibly, the sites that housed thousands of people are currently empty.
In the sub-prefecture of Doko, located 55 km from Siguiri, despite the ban on artisanal gold mining by the government, citizens wanted to visit the mines, but they were prevented by the agents.
As part of the obedience to the government’s decision, the commander of the territorial gendarmerie company of Siguiri, Lieutenant Colonel, Diawadou Barry, was on the ground to raise awareness among citizens. Several gold prospectors appreciated his professional method.
In the same vein, the public prosecutor at the court of first instance of Siguiri, Ibrahima 1 Camara, regularly uses the media to raise awareness among gold miners about stopping artisanal gold mining until further notice.
