This surge is driven mainly by the rise in prices and to a lesser extent by the quantities imported, indicates this report which is prepared according to the United Nations manual (IMTS 2010).

At the retail level, imports of diesel and fuel oils showed the strongest growth, the same source said, noting that these imports alone explain more than half of the increase in supplies of energy products.

At the same time, imports of semi-finished products increased by 46.5%, mainly due to the increase in imports of ammonia (+14.5 billion dirhams), plastic materials or plastic products (+5.5 billion dirhams), and chemical products (+4.4 billion dirhams), the report notes.

Imports of food products, for their part, showed a growth of 44.9%, resulting mainly from the increase in imports of wheat (+11.6 billion dirhams), barley (+2.5 billion dirhams) as well as raw or refined sugar (+2 billion dirhams).

For their part, imports of finished equipment products stood at 141.3 billion dirhams in 2022, up 19.3% compared to 2021. They are mainly driven by purchases of parts of aircraft and other air vehicles (+5.5 billion dirhams), piston engines (+3.1 billion dirhams), and wires and cables (+3.1 billion dirhams).

The Foreign Exchange Office also reported that raw materials and finished consumer products, which increased by 49.9% following the rise in imports of raw and unrefined sulfur (+8 billion dirhams) and purchases of raw or refined soybean oil (+2.3 billion dirhams), contributed to the overall increase in imports, with respective contributions of 7.1% and 6.3%.

Regarding imports of finished consumer products, they continued to rise to reach 142 billion dirhams in 2022. Purchases of parts and pieces for cars and passenger vehicles and fabrics and yarns of synthetic and artificial fibers are largely responsible for the increase in imports of this group of products in 2022.

This report enables, in addition to monitoring the economic situation, to respond to the information needs expressed by public authorities, international organizations and national and foreign economic operators.

The publication of this report is part of the actions of the Office des Changes aimed at further enriching the information relating to foreign trade statistics.
