There was a scandal on a ZDF talk show. That was the trigger.
The ZDF format Markus Lanz often leads to heated discussions. On Thursday, however, the situation got unusually out of hand. Four Jewish people were guests: writer Deborah Feldman, actress Adriana Altaras, historian Michael Wolffsohn and lawyer Michael Fürst.
Feldman in particular stood out for her brazen debate behavior, interrupting her counterparts and not letting them finish. At times she lapsed into crude digressions about conspiracy-ideological claims. Among other things, Feldman said that Germany was preventing peace in the Middle East. The German government was obeying an overpowering Israel lobby, according to the author of the Netflix hit “Unorthodox.”
Feldman grew up in an ultra-Orthodox family in New York. She now lives in Berlin. According to Bild, she has since abandoned her extremely religious lifestyle. According to the report, she is anti-Zionist.
When the author utters another conspiracy-ideological story, the other guests have had enough. “If I’m not allowed to say it, then please take it out of the show, otherwise I’ll be in jail tomorrow,” says Feldman in front of the camera. Michael Fürst, a lawyer, comments: “That’s terrible. That’s not possible.” A little later, historian Michael Wolffsohn has finally had enough. With the words “No! That’s enough!” he stands up from his seat.
He threatens: “I’m really leaving!” Moderator Lanz is able to calm him down at the last second and convince him not to leave the studio. Turning to Feldman, who had been loudly interrupting him repeatedly, Wolffsohn said: “He who shouts is wrong – as Goethe said.”
