Moscow | India and Russia aim to achieve bilateral trade of one hundred billion dollars (ten thousand crore) annually by 2030. Various issues, including strengthening trade ties, were discussed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Foreign Affairs Secretary Vinay Kwatra said issues including trade, capital investment, science and technology cooperation, defense and security were discussed.

Trade between the two countries was worth $65.7 billion in the fiscal year ending last March. There was a 33 percent increase compared to last year. The meeting also discussed how trade partnerships can contribute to the Make in India initiative. Efforts will be made to provide more markets for India’s agricultural and industrial products.
The two also discussed the need to go ahead with a free trade agreement with the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EU) and the proposed Chennai-Vladivostok Eastern Sea Corridor. There will be more discussion on this in the coming days. The two countries have signed nine agreements, including those related to the economic sector.

The war must end
Narendra Modi asked Vladimir Putin to be ready to end the war in Ukraine as it is heartbreaking to see innocent children being killed. Modi expressed concern during an informal meeting with Putin after a children’s hospital in Kiev was destroyed by a Russian attack. Modi demanded that India respect the United Nations Charter, including protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country, and resolve the issue through negotiations and diplomatic measures.

Indians should be brought back
Modi also expressed concern about Indians illegally joining the Russian army. Two Indians were killed in Russia’s war with Ukraine. Many people are trapped there as part of the army. Russia may take steps to bring them back.

The highest honor for Modi
Putin conferred Russia’s highest honor, the Order of St. Andrew, on Narendra Modi. After receiving the honour, Modi wrote on the X platform that he dedicates it to the people of India. This is the first time that this honor has been conferred on an Indian Prime Minister. The award announced in 2019 has now been awarded.
