Argentine President Javier Milei leads an event on the eve of Independence Day to finalize the long-delayed political agreement.
And despite the broad call for people to attend the event for Flag Day last month, Cristina Kirchner, the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice, the CGT and the opposition blocks in favour of dialogue will not be present tonight at the vigil in front of the historic house.
The initial signing of the May Pact, scheduled for the 25th of that month, was delayed by a month and a half due to the delay in Congress in approving the Ley Bases to which the Argentine president had tied the pact. The original decalogue of the Government remains unchanged except for the point of political reform, which has been replaced by a defense of “useful and modern” education.

Javier Milei, in the first minutes of Tuesday, headed the act in which the Pact of May was signed, a 10-point agreement for which he called on the entire political leadership. It is a sort of founding document that the president considers a “turning point” in the history of the country.
For their part, former Peronist presidents Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Alberto Fernández declined the invitation. In a public letter, Fernández justified her absence to avoid the possibility that it would otherwise be interpreted as an endorsement of “dangerously imprecise proposals that could achieve objectives not desired by the majority of our citizens.” Neither Kirchnerist legislators nor those from various opposition parties, nor the magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice, nor the leaders of the CGT, the largest labor union in the country, will attend.
The event is taking place at the Casa Histórica of the province of Tucumán, where the act that sealed Argentina’s Independence was signed on July 9, 1816. Precisely on the eve of that national holiday, governors, legislators and other political leaders who responded to the president’s call have gathered.
