American wrestler and actor John Cena has announced his retirement from wrestling. The next edition of the legendary WrestleMania event – from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) – in 2025 will be the last time the weightlifter steps into the ring.
“The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, WrestleMania 2025 will be my last one that I compete in,” said the 16-time WWE Champion throughout almost 20 years in the wrestling franchise.
The actor also announced his “official retirement” at an event in front of fans in Toronto (Canada), who even booed him when they heard the news.
Cena will embark on a farewell tour next year, with dozens of dates between January and December 2025, with his final match at the end of the year.
“Thank you so much for letting me play in the house you’ve built over so many years,” Cena continued, referring to WWE.
In recent times, Cena has strengthened his career as a Hollywood actor, where he has had important roles in films such as Barbie, Argylle and some installments of Fast & Furious.
Despite his Hollywood breakthrough, Cena has continued to remain in the WWE spotlight. Cena plans to remain in various operational roles within the WWE franchise from 2026 onwards, although not as a competitor.
