There are about 8,000 brown bears in the Romanian Carpathians – and they attack hikers several times. A 19-year-old woman dies in one of these attacks. Rescuers can only recover her body.
A 19-year-old woman has been attacked by a bear in the Carpathians in Romania. The wild animal dragged the young tourist away while he was hiking in the Bucegi massif south of Brasov, according to an eyewitness who made an emergency call there. This was reported by the Romanian news agency Mediafax.
Less than an hour later on Tuesday evening, mountain rescuers and police managed to recover the woman’s body. They shot the bear because it also tried to attack the rescuers.
According to government estimates, there are approximately 8,000 brown bears living in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. It is the second largest bear population in Europe, after Russia. The animals repeatedly attack the hikers, invade farms and rummage through garbage cans in cities like Brasov in search of food.
After the latest death, Romanian Environment Minister Mircea Fechet called for higher killing quotas for bears. As a minister, he claimed to kill an annual number of 500 animals, but after consultation with other institutions, that number was reduced to 220. Among other things, the authorities repeatedly bring aggressive bears to other regions in the Romania. This method is useless, said Minister Fechet to the “Antena3 CNN” broadcaster. It just means “we move the problem from one area to another”.
