This work was presented as part of the section “Literature as a tool for expressing and promoting cultural diversity” of the Council’s program for this event, with the aim of highlighting literary works reflecting cultural and linguistic diversity in Morocco and the different tributaries of national identity.

Published by the “l’établissement Afaq pour les études et l’édition” in 2017, this novel depicts the story of “Khalil”, a twenty-year-old young man suffering from kidney failure, who tries by all means to reach the other shore. Upon arrival, a new ordeal begins, mixing the weight of exile far from the homeland and the pain of an unfinished love story.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Bouhada stressed that literature, and more specifically the novel genre, offers the writer a greater opportunity to express his feelings, his pains and his hopes. He noted, in this sense, that his novel draws on scenes inspired by the Hassani cultural heritage, including poetry and popular proverbs, to “evoke our human experience and contribute to making our culture known and sharing it with others.”

For his part, the researcher in Hassani cultural heritage, Lahbib Aadid, indicated that the novel “departure without farewell” draws on components of Hassani culture, affirming that the integration of national cultural specificities in the novelistic creation allows to make known the cultural richness which characterizes the Kingdom and the components of its national identity.

Holder of a doctorate in history from the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez, Mr. Bouhada also has to his credit “Bakaya houloum izza”, his first novel published in 2013.

The 29th edition of SIEL coincides this year with the commemoration by the CNDH of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission. Through a stand set up at the Salon, the Council presents to the public the distinguished Moroccan experience in transitional justice, and the most important legislative and constitutional reforms that have led to several achievements in the Kingdom.
