This week, the investigation of the criminal case against Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Musavat Party and Democratic Forces, will be concluded.

Tofig Yagublu’s daughter Nigar Hazin gave this information to Voice of America with reference to lawyer Agil Layj.

According to him, on May 14, investigator Abdulla Jalilli met with Tofig Yagubluya at the Baku Investigation Detention Center and announced the final indictment. “During this week, the investigator will announce his decision on the conclusion of the investigation. Next week, the lawyers will get acquainted with the investigation materials. It is likely that the case will be sent to court by the end of this month,” he said.

Nigar Hazi says that Tofig Yagublu does not accept the charges announced against him.

The investigative body did not react to what Nigar Hazi said. In addition, the official bodies have not yet announced when the preliminary investigation will be completed. Usually, after the investigation is completed, the criminal case is sent to the court and the lawyers are given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the investigation case. But these have not happened yet.

On April 6, the Baku Narimanov District Court heard the case of extending the pretrial detention of Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council and the Musavat Party. Yagublu’s prison term was extended for another 2 months.

On April 5, Tofig Yagublu’s motion to replace the pre-trial detention measure with house arrest was rejected at the Baku Court of Appeal chaired by judge Ziya Shirinov.

Tofig Yagublu was arrested on December 14 last year. Articles 178.3.2 (fraud causing massive damage), 320.1 (falsification, illegal preparation or sale of official documents, state awards, seals, stamps, forms) and 320.2 (knowingly using forged documents) of the Criminal Code against him a criminal case has been initiated.

The politician has been repeatedly subjected to criminal and administrative persecution. International organizations recognized him as a prisoner of conscience.

More than twenty activists and journalists have been arrested in Azerbaijan in recent months. These arrests have been condemned by numerous international human rights organizations, as well as by the US State Department.

The government of Azerbaijan does not accept international criticism regarding the persons known as political prisoners in the country and considers it biased. Government officials declare that people in Azerbaijan are not persecuted for their political views and that all fundamental rights are fully guaranteed.
