The dispute over tariffs on Chinese electric cars is entering the next round. Beijing has now announced that it wants to initiate an investigation against the EU.

In the trade dispute with Europe, China is now itself conducting investigations against the European Union. The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing announced on Wednesday an investigation into “trade and investment barriers” resulting from the EU’s actions. In the past, Brussels itself had initiated a series of investigations into state subsidies for key Chinese sectors – Beijing has repeatedly threatened countermeasures.

The Chinese ministry says it is following up on a complaint from the country’s national chamber of commerce regarding the import and export of machinery and electrical goods, including locomotives and equipment for photovoltaic and wind power plants. The investigation is scheduled to last until January 2025, but could be extended for another three months.

Brussels recently imposed increased tariffs on electric cars produced in China, which initially apply provisionally and could come into effect in the autumn. This was sharply criticized by Beijing.
