The Public Prosecutor’s Office explained that the chats are information from a series of ongoing criminal investigations.

The National Prosecutor’s Office, through Angel Valencia, confirmed to the Supreme Court that it will not hand over to the newly created Ethics Committee the chats related to the appointment of judges, and which involve, among others, the lawyer Luis Hermosilla and the former judge Juan Antonio Poblete.

In a statement signed by Valencia and sent to the highest court, The Public Prosecutor’s Office explained that “it will not be able to deliver a copy of the communications made by WhatsApp contained in the criminal investigations involving Juan Antonio Poblete Méndez and Luis Hermosilla Osorio, as well as to the ministers of the Supreme Court and Gonzalo Migueles, as requested by the ethics committee of the Supreme Court.”

The National Prosecutor’s Office explained that its decision responds to the fact that “The request is related to information included in ongoing criminal investigationswhich, in accordance with the provisions of the criminal procedure code and other laws in force, must be kept secret.”

“The national prosecutor reiterated the highest willingness for inter-institutional collaboration to clarify the facts by the Ethics Commission of the Supreme Court, in accordance with the powers of the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” the document concludes.

The chats being investigated by the National Prosecutor’s Office reveal the efforts made by the now ex-judge Poblete and the lawyer Luis Hermosilla for the appointment of magistrates in the Judicial Branch, which also involves the candidate for mayor of Santiago, Mario Desbordes.

Added to these are the messages from Gonzalo Migueles, Angela Vivanco’s partner, to try to influence the appointment of the National Prosecutor.
