A woman who used Apple’s Find My Device app to locate her missing AirPods was shocked to discover they were being held in a sprawling New York jail.
She posted on X (formerly Twitter) that her AirPods were found on Rikers Island, the largest correctional facility in New York City.
Rikers Island, located in the Bronx, is a sprawling complex of 10 jails that house both local offenders awaiting trial and those serving sentences of up to one year. The total prison population can reach up to 15,000 people. Surprisingly, Jocelyn’s headphones were found in the possession of an inmate. She posted a photo asking, “Why are my iPods in Rikers?”
In the comments, one user suggested that she probably wouldn’t want to use the headphones again, hinting at how they might have gotten into the prison. Another user agreed, adding: “You should be more concerned about how they got there? Depending on the method, I wouldn’t want them back.”
A third user jokingly suggested, “I’d keep the sound playing,” referring to the app’s ability to play a sound on a lost device to help locate it.
Rikers Island, which covers 167 hectares, is one of the world’s largest complexes of correctional and psychiatric institutions. It has a history of violence, with inmates attacking officers, and was ranked among the top 10 worst correctional facilities in the United States in 2013.
Earlier, “Cursor” reported that the newlyweds sent unusual wedding invitations to their guests.
