He predicted that this year the largest amount of cargo will be timber. And then container cargo and agricultural cargo.
“As far as timber cargoes are concerned, they are mostly local, so there is less risk of fluctuations. Agricultural cargoes are also local, and it is quite certain that they will continue to be so,” added Stein.
The chairman of the board of the Freeport of Riga pointed out that container cargo comes in transit, including from Central Asia, where various types of restrictions may appear, but for now there are none, and cargo from Central Asia can be imported quite freely.
“This is also a corridor for cargo from China, along which cargo can be brought to the port by rail in 12-13 days and then sent all over Europe, which is much faster than going all the way by ship. However, all these cargoes have a high risk because Russia is in the middle, and we don’t know if at some point they can say that something is not satisfactory and introduce restrictions,” Stein added.
He noted that there are no such restrictions for the time being, and the Port of Riga hopes that container cargo volumes will also remain.
According to him, until the beginning of July, the total amount of cargo transhipped in the port of Riga was 7.8% less than last year at this time, while this year’s plan is to transship around 20 million tons, and currently half of it has been fulfilled.
It has already been reported that 18.794 million tons of cargo were handled in the Freeport of Riga last year, which is 20.1% less than in 2022.
On the other hand, 7.472 million tons of cargo were transhipped in the Freeport of Riga in five months this year, which is 10.2% less than in the corresponding period of 2023.
The Port of Riga is the largest port in Latvia in terms of transshipped cargo.
