Former paramilitary commander Salvatore Mancuso is about to leave La Picota prison in Bogotá, the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) confirmed.
The institution reported that Mancuso has no pending judicial requirements, which makes his release imminent.
INPEC has asked the National Protection Unit (UNP) to implement a security plan to guarantee Mancuso’s life and safety once he is released.
«Once the notification of the release order for the prisoner Salvatore Mancuso Gómez was received by the Judge of Execution of Sentences of Justice and Peace, the INPEC in the Penitentiary and Prison Complex of Bogotá ‘La Picota’ provided a legal team to carry out the substantiation of the resume of the prisoner“the Institute said in a statement.

The release process included sending 31 letters to various judicial entities, such as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Courts, the Superior Court, the National Anti-Money Laundering Unit, Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), in order to review Mancuso’s file and rule out any precautionary measures.
INPEC Director Daniel Gutiérrez said that, with the help of the Minister of Justice, they have maintained constant communication with the judicial authorities to obtain a quick and conclusive response on any pending request.Today, the La Picota establishment confirmed to us that there are no pending requirements,” said Gutiérrez.
Mancuso’s release marks a significant moment as he was a key figure in Colombia’s paramilitary conflicts and his release from prison will be closely watched both nationally and internationally.
