Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani directed, today, Tuesday, to raise the level of health and housing services for inmates of detention centers and prisons.
The Prime Minister’s Media Office stated in a statement received by the (INA) that “Al-Sudani chaired a meeting to discuss the conditions of prisons, detention and care centers, in the presence of the Ministers of Interior, Justice, and Health, and the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Human Rights. During the meeting, he listened to a general presentation on the reality of prisons and detention centers, and the level of health services and humanitarian care provided to inmates, convicts and detainees. The projects of reform cities, projects to reform centers and their executive aspects were also followed up, in addition to the Prime Minister’s emphasis on following up and taking into account everything related to human rights aspects.”
The statement added that “the Prime Minister directed to raise the levels of health services provided to inmates, and to continue the rehabilitation of detention centers and prisons and to provide complete infrastructure; in order to avoid overcrowding, and to prevent the number of inmates in any center from exceeding the numbers determined by the design.”
The statement added that “the discussion touched on the legislation related to the management and care of prisons and centers, following up on the legislation of the draft law on alternative punishments currently being considered by the State Council, and following up on the implementation and drafting of exchange agreements to enforce rulings.”
