The Foreign Media Department of the Government of National Unity responded to a report published by the British newspaper The Independent, which claimed that Libya was bankrupt, noting that the report was full of fallacies and inaccurate allegations.

The External Media Department confirmed that the report was not based on any statements from official bodies, but rather relied on analyses from an undisclosed source that warn of the specter of bankruptcy.

The External Media Department also criticised the report for ignoring all international reports issued by economic institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, which confirmed Libya’s good economic position and its ability to achieve high economic growth during 2024 estimated at approximately 8%.

The External Media Department pointed out that the report ignored the growth of foreign exchange reserves over the past three years, which is clear evidence of Libya’s recovery from years of war.

The External Media Department pointed out that the report revealed the true affiliation of this media outlet, which took the name of a well-known press institution to pass a political agenda, noting that the author of the report works for one of the channels biased towards one of the political parties.

The External Media Department referred to previous reports issued by the Government of National Unity and the Central Bank, including: total public revenues reaching 45 billion dinars, and total expenditures reaching 43.7 billion dinars, with a surplus of 1.3 billion dinars.

The statement added that the oil sector’s foreign currency revenues during the first half of the year amounted to $9.1 billion. The public sector’s uses during the period amounted to only $2.374 billion, of which $1.181 billion was for the National Oil Corporation to develop oil production.

The Department of External Media confirmed that the Government of National Unity welcomes any communication with the media to respond to any inquiries through it in order to clarify the facts.
