“The outcome of this war will determine the global security system for decades,” Stoltenberg said at the opening of the NATO summit in Washington.

With such an aggressive neighbor as Russia, there are no options “that would not cause losses and risks”, the NATO Secretary General admitted.

“The biggest cost and the biggest risk would be Russia’s victory in Ukraine. We must not allow that,” Stoltenverg stressed.

He suggested that winning the war would encourage Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, as well as other dictators in Iran, North Korea and China, to further aggression.

“Now is the time to stand up for freedom and democracy,” Stoltenberg emphasized.

At the same time, he expressed his support for the admission of new countries, including Ukraine, to NATO.

The Secretary-General noted that the expansion of the alliance after the end of the Cold War united Europe, paved the way for integration and brought peace and prosperity to the continent. As then, today too, “clarity and determination” are needed, he stressed.
