Due to the effects of global climate change, the weather in Korea has also changed. As heavy rains occur frequently in the summer, large and small incidents and accidents occur one after another. In particular, flooding of roads and underground passages has a significant impact on vehicle operation and safety. Last year, a sudden guerrilla downpour caused a disaster in which 14 people died when the Gungpyeong 2 underground passage in Osong, Chungcheongbuk-do, was submerged in water. To prevent such accidents, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors have decided to cooperate with government agencies. The aim is to prevent vehicle flooding accidents and damage by improving the navigation functions that are currently installed in most vehicles.

On the 10th, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Ministry of Environment at the Han River Flood Control Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, to ‘improve navigation to prevent flooding accidents on roads and underpasses.’

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials including Song Chang-hyun, President of Hyundai Motor Company-Kia AVP Headquarters, Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT, Han Wha-jin, Minister of Environment, and Hwang Jong-seong, President of the National Intelligence Information Society Agency (NIA).

This business agreement focuses on providing real-time flood risk warning notification services through navigation in preparation for flooding accidents caused by the annual summer monsoon season. It is intended to contribute to strengthening national safety.

The flood-related navigation advancement project has been promoted jointly by the public and private sectors since January. Six companies, including Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors, Kakao Mobility, T Map Mobility, Naver, iNavi Systems, and Mappers, joined forces with government agencies such as the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Institute of Environmental Research to apply the service.

The Ministry of Science and ICT oversaw the project, established a collaborative system, and coordinated the direction of navigation improvement in preparation for various disaster situations other than flood information. The Ministry of Environment established a system to quickly provide flood risk information to the NIA. Each company is responsible for transmitting the data relayed by the NIA to the navigation systems of vehicles driving around areas at risk of flooding.

Hyundai and Kia have been providing this service since the 4th. In addition to the existing flood control information notification, it additionally displays flood risk areas and risk guidance information due to dam discharge according to real-time flood warnings. Hyundai and Kia customers can receive risk notifications through navigation when driving near flood warning areas and take preemptive measures such as detouring the relevant section of road or slowing down before entering an underpass, a Hyundai Motor Group official said. Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis users who have subscribed to the connected car service can use it right away without a separate software update.

Song Chang-hyun, President and Head of AVP Division of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors, said, “In terms of national safety, a public-private data sharing and technological advancement collaboration system for real-time data-based services is becoming increasingly important,” adding, “Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors will do their best to secure customer safety by establishing a collaboration system and providing services more quickly.”

Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho said, “We signed a business agreement to cooperate more closely with companies that have worked hard together for the safety of the people,” and added, “Based on this, we will more actively pursue public-private cooperation so that digital technology can contribute to minimizing damage to the people caused by rapid climate change and enhancing crisis response capabilities.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors emphasized that they are committed to creating a safe road environment by sharing real-time traffic signal data at major intersections across the country with the National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority.
