Firefighters clean up after a fire in Elgg on Saturday, March 16.
Bai./Police Station Officer. In the first half of 2024 there were a series of arsons in the centre of Elgg and the surrounding area. First a fire broke out in the historic village centre of Elgg. On the night of 16 March the fire spread from an empty house to another house. Ten people lost their homes.
Then, just a month later, a barn down the road burned to the ground. Another fire broke out in the small community east of Canton in late April. An isolated head was affected.
This is part of a spate of cases in which previously unknown perpetrators set fire to or attempted to set fire to buildings.
The investigations by the Zurich cantonal police and the Winterthur/Unterland public prosecutor’s office were intensive and ongoing. Now it is clear: they led to the arrest of a 44-year-old local Swiss woman on Sunday.
According to a statement on Tuesday (9 July), the woman is strongly suspected of committing arson in and around Elgg. Further investigations are ongoing by the cantonal police and the Winterthur/Unterland public prosecutor’s office.
The public prosecutor’s office has initiated criminal proceedings against the woman, who has largely confessed to the crime, and applied for pre-trial detention at the Compulsory Measures Court.
There is great relief in Elgg, including from Mayor Ruth Büchi-Vögeli (SVP). But she did not know anything more than what the police had announced, she told NZZ.
There was fear among the population, Ruth Bucci-Vogeli said. She heard from residents who had inspected their homes that evening because they were made of wood. The mayor said the relief was also great for the fire department, which never knew when it would start working again.
