People Power Party presidential candidate Han Dong-hoon stated in a debate on the 11th that “the media and public opinion are responsible for analyzing the causes of the (defeat and victory) in the general election,” and that his belief that the loss in the general election is entirely his own has not changed. Candidate Han is embroiled in controversy for ignoring an apology text from President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife, Kim Keon-hee, before the general election.
One candidate was asked about his remarks that he “was not worthy of being chosen by the people” and “the defeat in the general election is entirely my responsibility” after the general election in April 2024 during the “Right Then, Wrong Now” segment of a TV debate on the 11th. The moderator said, “During the first debate not long ago, you also mentioned that you thought that if Ms. Kim Kun-hee had apologized (for the Dior bag acceptance controversy), the results of the general election would have been different,” and asked, “Have your thoughts on responsibility for the general election changed?”
One candidate responded, “It is the job of the media and public opinion to analyze the cause of the general election,” and “I have no changed my mind.” One candidate continued, “However, as the person who has most earnestly and passionately looked at the party’s problems most closely, I will fulfill my responsibility by resolving the party’s problems during this golden time of change.”
Earlier, in the first TV debate on the 9th, when asked, “If President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife Kim Kun-hee had apologized to the nation during the April general election, would the ruling party’s crushing defeat have resulted in a different outcome?” Candidate Han, along with candidates Na Kyung-won, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Won Hee-ryong, chose “O”. Regarding the reason for choosing O that day, Candidate Han explained, “The public sentiment in the last general election was a combination of many issues that we failed to meet, and this was one of them.” He continued, “I reminded her that I demanded an apology from (Ms. Kim) in order to correct this and that she did not meet the public’s expectations.”
