(ANSA) – PADUA, JULY 11 – Bitten by a seal during a holiday in South Africa, a boy living in the province of Padua, once he returned to Italy, was given anti-rabies prophylaxis by the Hygiene and Public Health Office of Ulss 6 Euganea.
The local health authority, alerted by the Ministry of Health and the Veneto Region, is monitoring the case, which is very rare in the literature. Over the last month, two other residents in the province of Padua have been vaccinated against rabies after being bitten by two stray dogs in endemic foreign areas (in Bali and Bolivia).
The minor had been bitten by the seal during an excursion about three weeks ago in a wildlife park; since in the same period a dead seal had been found on the South African coast that tested positive for the rabies virus, as a precaution the case was followed very carefully. The boy is currently asymptomatic. (ANSA).
