After receiving a report about a missing Chinese woman in her twenties in the Shizuoka region on Monday evening, the local coast guard launched a search and rescue operation.
“We received this information on July 8. at approximately 7:55 p.m. after the woman’s friend arrived at a nearby convenience store and reported her missing,” an official from the local Japan Coast Guard told AFP.
The woman, whose name has not been released, told rescuers that she was swept out to sea by the current and unable to return to shore because she was swimming with an inflatable tyre.
Finally, at 7:48 a.m. on Wednesday. it was spotted floating near the tip of the Bose Peninsula in the southern city of Chiba, the official explained.
A nearby tanker was radioed and two of its crew jumped into the water to rescue her.
“The straight line (from the beach to the rescue site) is 80 kilometers… but it is believed to have drifted an even greater distance on the waves,” the official said.
The rescued woman was taken to the hospital, but there was no need to hospitalize her, as she was sane and had not lost enough fluids to threaten her life.
